How Your System Works
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that enters your home through cracks and openings in the foundation, drawn in by the pressure difference between the soil and your living space. Once inside, it can accumulate to unsafe levels. Your radon reduction system, also known as an active soil depressurization system, works by reversing this pressure relationship. A specialized fan creates a vacuum beneath your home, drawing radon gas away before it can enter and venting it safely outdoors above the roofline. This educational approach ensures long-term safety for you and your family.

Understanding Your Manometer
What Does a Normal Reading Look Like?
The U-shaped tube on your system pipe is the manometer. It measures the pressure difference created by the fan. A normal reading shows the liquid levels at different heights on each side of the tube. This confirms the fan is pulling air and your system is active.
What If the Reading Changes?
Minor fluctuations in the liquid level are normal and often related to seasonal soil moisture or atmospheric pressure changes. However, if the levels on both sides of the U-tube become perfectly even, it indicates that there is no pressure difference, meaning the fan may have stopped or the power is out.
When Should I Call?
If the manometer levels stay even after checking your circuit breaker, or if you notice unusual noises from the system, it's time to contact Radon Hound. We recommend checking your manometer once a month to ensure your family remains protected from radon gas.

Power Outages, Seasons & Renovations
Power Outages
If your power goes out, your radon fan will stop. Don’t panic—radon levels rise slowly. Once power is restored, your system will automatically restart and begin clearing the gas. Check your manometer 24 hours after power returns to confirm the liquid levels have shifted back to their normal, offset positions.
Seasonal Changes
Radon levels fluctuate naturally with the seasons. They are typically highest in the winter when your home is sealed tight and the ground is frozen, preventing gas from escaping outside. Heavy rain can also temporarily increase soil pressure, pushing more gas toward your foundation. Your system is designed to handle these peaks, but long-term monitoring is the only way to track these shifts accurately.
Home Renovations
Structural changes to your home can impact the soil pressure and the effectiveness of your mitigation system. We recommend a follow-up radon test and a system check if you undertake projects such as:
- Adding a new addition or basement extension
- Installing a new HVAC system or powerful exhaust fans
- Finishing a previously open basement
- Major foundation repairs or new sump pump installations
